Did you know that a symbol ô with a ’ marker over it exists (Ố)? Well, just as Ồ does. And Ỗ. And even Ổ. What for the love of god is Ộ? And what do you mean a regular Ô and all of these variations sound clearly different? That is Vietnamese for you.

It has all kinds of crazy diacritics. I used to learn some basics of this language some time ago, but recently remembered about it again after a random youtube video, and decided to review what I know about it.

Phonetics is and was the hardest part of it. Even for me, as a linguist who has an ability to understand phonological diagrams it is quite a challenge to produce accurate sounds in Vietnamese. And I am not even mentioning tones, which Vietnamese has more than Chinese does. At least they are clearly marked with diacritics.

Grammar is the easy part, I would call it normal. Not too complicated and not too easy. No point in dwelling into it in this blog.

Fun fact, I actually used the Vietnamese word for "language" (tiếng) in the name of my telegram channel, back then when I created it. You can find it in the links section somewhere above.

I am for sure not planning to learn this language seriously, but I like knowing the basics of langs, just for the sake of it. And Vietnamese is cool.

Is this the end? I've got no one else around me. I am alone now and will stay like that for the rest of my life if I continue to go on. There is no point.
